What if I don't know the genre?
Of course you know the genre, you are the only person who does! It is important that you choose the genre where you think the book belongs. This enhances many of the queries by making a better match of your opinions to the books you read.
How are the rankings calculated?
It depends on the query, but basically once a book is chosen for a query its overall ranking is determined by the average of each individual users' ranking. The individual book ranking for a user ranking is calculated by the normalized reverse of its ranking times the user's Q. Thus, for example, a book ranked in the middle of all your books will always have a weight of 0.5 (times your Q), no matter how many books you have ranked. The books are then presented in order from the highest to the lowest based on these numbers.
What is my Q?
Your Q is a weight which is multiplied by the ranking you give a book and determines the book's final placement in any query. It also determines how many books are returned to you when you perform a query. It is calculated based on several factors including the number of books you have ranked and reviewed. The formula that calculates your Q is designed to entice you into entering more and more books. It is up to you to find out how many books it takes to really start increasing the Q's value --- How many reviews? Does a review increase the Q more than just ranking a book? Does a good review weigh more than a bad one? etc…
How do I enter books I don't like?
Let's consider two types of "bad" books. Books you didn't like, but maybe someone else did, and books that you started and just couldn't justify wasting your time to finish. The best way you can rank the first type is to put at the bottom of your books and write a short review stating your problems with the book. This may provide an opposing viewpoint from other positive reviews. Thus giving others plenty of information to decide for themselves if they want to read the book. For the second type of book --- just don't enter it at all. It's best we never speak of it again.
